Acer has a gaming PC? Who knew? In any case, Creative has licensed the THX TruStudio and EAX Advanced HD 5.0 technologies to the up-and-coming vendor for an unknown sum. In any case, it’s a bit of money for the company, and Acer isn’t really their competition, so there’s no real bad side to this that I can see. Keep reading for the full press release and link.

CREATIVE ANNOUNCES AGREEMENT WITH ACER TO OFFER THX TRUSTUDIO PC™ AND CREATIVE EAX® ADVANCED HD™ 5.0 AUDIO TECHNOLOGY

SINGAPORE - 18 November 2009 - Creative Technology Ltd. today announced its agreement with Acer to offer THX TruStudio PC™ with Creative EAX® Advanced HD™ 5.0 audio technology in Acer gaming desktops.

THX TruStudio PC provides groundbreaking PC audio technologies, the result of collaborative research and development from Creative and THX. Together, these technologies deliver the fullest audio experience for games, music and movies, while remaining true to the source and intention of the artists who created it.

Creative EAX Advanced HD 5.0 is a collection of powerful, innovative audio technologies designed by Creative’s world-class audio scientists to bring true interactive 3D audio to PC gaming. The sophisticated environment effects of Creative EAX Advanced HD 5.0 provide a greater sense of realism to the gaming experience, providing a genuine competitive edge in multiplayer games.

“Acer is intent on bringing fresh technologies to people that empower their life at work and at play,” said David Liu, Assistant Vice President of Stationary Business Unit, Acer Inc. “By introducing THX TruStudio and Creative EAX Advanced HD 5.0 in the new Acer gaming desktop, Acer is bringing together the leaders of audio technology for consumer electronics and PC products to deliver the best audio experience on the PC.”

“We’re excited to work with Acer to introduce THX TruStudio PC and Creative EAX Advanced HD 5.0 in Acer gaming desktops, providing a new level of audio performance in gaming and digital entertainment,” said Steve Erickson, Vice President and General Manager of Audio and Video, Creative. “This gives gamers the competitive advantage of a powerful audio arsenal, while providing an unparalleled experience for music and movies on the PC.”

“Today’s gamers expect their sound experience to be on an even playing field with the graphics performance,” said Matt Chrispen of the THX audio team. “Whether playing the latest first person shooter or a massively multiplayer role playing game, THX TruStudio PC with Creative’s EAX Advanced HD 5.0 technology provides Acer gaming desktops the tools to accurately process and reproduce the game environment, soundtracks and effects. The result is an immersive sound field that puts players in the middle of the game.”

THX TruStudio PC
The THX TruStudio PC suite of technologies features THX TruStudio PC Surround™, THX TruStudio PC Crystalizer™, THX TruStudio PC Speaker™, THX TruStudio PC Dialog Plus™ and THX TruStudio PC Smart Volume™.

THX TruStudio PC Surround
Ideal for gaming, THX TruStudio PC Surround provides immersion control to enhance the natural sense of audio depth and spaciousness by creating virtual surround sound channels. Stereo content or multi-channel content played over stereo speakers and headphones will sound as if it is coming from all sides while voices remain centred in front and original balance and timbre is preserved.

THX TruStudio PC Crystalizer
THX TruStudio PC Crystalizer restores the natural dynamic range that is lost when game audio, iTunes and MP3 music get compressed. This adds an enhanced level of realism for movies and games and makes music sound as good as the artist originally intended.

THX TruStudio PC Speaker
THX TruStudio PC Speaker fills in the missing low frequency tones and gives the extra impact for a better entertainment experience. Consumers no longer have to tolerate lack of bass in speakers built into notebook PCs, 2.0 speakers or headphones, as THX TruStudio PC Speaker technology dramatically improves the sound experience without a subwoofer.

THX TruStudio PC Dialog Plus
THX TruStudio PC Dialog Plus enhances the voices in movies for clearer dialogue, allowing the listener to hear the dialogue over the rest of the soundtrack and over ambient noise in the listening environment.

THX TruStudio PC Smart Volume
THX TruStudio PC Smart Volume addresses the problem of abrupt volume level changes during playback and between songs by automatically and continuously measuring volume, and intelligently applying gain and attenuation to compensate for those changes.

When I read the Singapore Business-Times article over on epiZENter yesterday, there was a curious mention of demonstrations at a ‘Shenzen conference’. Not being particularly great with China’s second busiest port city, I thought it was just an industry conference. However, that has changed with the press release from ZiiLABS today, which announced a ‘Zii Summit’ for December 1-2 in Shenzen. According to the press release, Creative CEO Sim Wong Hoo, in addition to the head of ZiiLABS, Hock Leow, will be giving keynote addresses on the first day in addition to a press conference. More importantly, however, is the seminar that will be held over the two days to showcase the ‘technology, platforms, products, services, and content’ of the Zii ecosystem. Simultaneously, however, is the real point of the summit- to showcase the full range of Zii-powered devices. The wording in the press release, which is copied below, is overwhelmingly positive as all press releases are, mentions multiple Zii-powered products. The door has been locked shut on any leaks thus far to upcoming devices, but it seems that this will open the floodgates. I’m certainly excited.

Creative unveils new Zii chip in Beijing

CREATIVE Technology yesterday unveiled the most powerful chip under its fledgling Zii stable – adding more impetus to the MP3 player maker’s new business of supplying low-powered and multimedia-savvy computer chips and components to electronics makers worldwide.

The new chip – made-to-order by Taiwanese foundry TSMC and coined ZMS-08 – was launched in an event in Beijing. It is said to be four times more powerful than its predecessor but consumes only half the power.

Creative minted its Zii technology at the start of this year. Developed by the company’s graphics chip subsidiary 3DLabs, which has now been renamed ZiiLabs, it is trumpeted as a new type of chip platform that lets third-party electronics manufacturers make more powerful, less power-hungry and cheaper products. Like its predecessor, the latest Zii chip is aimed at makers of smartphones, netbooks, video-conferencing systems, connected TVs, digital signage systems, home media hubs, Web tablets and others.

But with a raft of new features – including Blu-ray quality video playback – and improved performance, the ZMS-08 will help Creative unlock more doors into this diverse market, said ZiiLabs president Hock Leow.

Speaking to BT before the Beijing launch, he said the interest for Zii has especially intensified since Creative brought out a hand-held device based on Zii, called Zii EGG, in July this year.

Adoption of the technology has also been rising. Mr Leow said that a fleet of finished products powered by Zii are expected to be brought out by manufacturers next month during Creative’s first Zii summit, in China’s Shenzhen. This event is expected to draw ‘thousands’ of visitors.

Creative’s FY2010 Q1 results were made official just a short while ago. Pretty much good news all around except in one major category: net sales, which were down nearly 50% over Q1 2009. This might typically be cause for alarm, but with a worldwide recession and no real products introduced during the quarter, it’s not entirely unexpected. The bigger news, however, is the net loss: down to $1 million US. Last year at this time, the company lost $40.8 million. Here’s the rest:

Gross Profit Margin: Up 25%

Net Loss: $1 million US. Last year, the first quarter brought nearly $40.8 million US in loss. According to the report, this was due to a 50% decrease in loss in operating costs.

Research: Down 17%. Cuts were made in areas that are not strategic for the company, whatever that means.

Gains: $4.9 million from disposal of investment, $5.8 million in foreign exchange gains, $6.2 million from Qala divestment

Losses: $15.4 million foreign exchange losses, $8.9 million in loss of financial assets because of the recession

Now as for total balance, I’m not a financial expert, and it seems as if they make these things purposely impossible to understand, but if I’m reading this correctly, the company has a comfortable balance, where they could lose a lot of money still before they go under. My tentative guess is $325 million US in the green. If someone has a better read, please let me know in the comments so I can fix it.

Over on epiZENter, ramakandra relayed from his sources that the ZEN X-Fi2 isn’t meant as a full replacement for the X-Fi itself, but rather a way to reduce parts inventory and testing the waters for the Zii consumer model. Seemed feasible enough at the time, but now Sim has dropped the same commentary on our post about the X-Fi2:

As for the Zen touch screen x-fi2, I think some smart people have guessed correctly why it had to be released. It will make sure we will continue to generate sufficient revenue so as to cut losses and possibly break even this holiday season while we prepare for the Zii updates…

Breaking even over this quarter would amount to quite a turnabout for the Singapore company, who has posted losses for several straight quarters. Helping to feed that ambition is $6.1 million in funding from a divestment in QALA Singapore, a local ISP. I’m certainly not an expert in the world of finance, so correct me in the comment section, but this divestment is like pulling an investment from a company that you had previously funded. Creative originally invested $1.6 million, so the net gain is $4.5 million over time, a very smart investment. Qala needs not fear, however, as they were just bought by MobileOne, a major Singapore cell carrier for $10.3 million US. Clearly, this is meant to clear funding for the Zii launch.

Speaking of the Zii launch, Sim also dropped a link to the recently updated ZiiLABS.com events page, which shows when and where ZiiLABS will be demonstrating products over the next couple of months. Here they are:

IBC 2009

Amsterdam
11th – 15th September 2009

Consumer Electronics Show (CES 2010)

Las Vegas
7th – 10th January, 2010

World Mobile Congress (Mobile World Congress, misnamed by ZiiLABS)

Barcelona, Spain
15th – 18th, February 2010

I’ll be putting my money, if I had any, on CES as the big announcement, as this is a Creative tradition to announce stuff a couple of days prior to the convention, then having a media blitz over the convention days. The company has garnered three “CES Best in Show” awards in the last decade, and they sure would enjoy a fourth. It’s almost more interesting to see the MWC announcement- perhaps a mobile carrier partner will be lined up by then?

After the announcement of the THX partnership and news about the ZiiEGG, many in the Creative community (myself included) felt like the company had pulled a 180° and was now sailing into a brighter, more positive future. Apparently, the markets feel the same way- Creative stock is up massively. The price opened at $5.95 per share on Tuesday- a 30% uptake in one day. Unheard of. As of this post, it’s up another $1.10 today- another 20% increase by my math. These are levels that the company hasn’t seen quite some time- eleven months according TODAYonline. It seems that the press is taking note as well: Reuters, TODAYonline, and ChannelNewsAsia all have stories featuring Creative. TODAYonline even opened with the following line: “Is entrepreneur Sim Wong Hoo crafting a new strategy for his company?” Surely this can be only good things for a company that has seen only negative momentum on the stocks- let’s hope the market share for DAPs follows shortly. C’mon Creative!

After this week’s staggering news regarding the new touchscreen player comes the business as usual news from Creative. The inPerson conferencing system, announced quite a while back, has finally gained some real traction in the OEM market. While we don’t have sales figures or stats, the inPerson really hasn’t made any news at all, and probably is considered a bust financially. Finally, someone may turn that around. Today, Creative and Walsh Wireless have announced that they have teamed up to package the inPerson system with Sprint wireless, thus resulting in truly wireless high quality video conferencing. Originally with wifi for the office building, the new system will work anywhere that there is a Sprint data connection, which means only really large US cities. Not a huge announcement from the company, but a bit of positive news from a product that we all thought was dead in the water is perhaps a good sign of things to come. Intriguing moreso, perhaps, because Sprint is a main rival of AT&T (exclusive carrier of the iPhone in the US), and a previously unknown OEM coming out of the woodwork for this partnership. A precursor to a Zii/Plaszma partnership with Sprint? Who knows. We can keep hoping.

PRWeb-Creative Announces Agreement with Walsh Wireless to Enable Mobile Use of Portable inPerson Conferencing System on the Sprint 3G and 4G Networks

Preorder at PreferredOrders.

Milpitas, CA (Vocus/PRWEB ) July 29, 2009 — Creative today announced its agreement with Walsh Wireless that optimizes the breakthrough Creative inPerson video conferencing device for mobile use with the Sprint Now Network™.

The combined efforts of Creative and Walsh Wireless enable inPerson to be used as a mobile device in a coffee shop, airport, hotel or anywhere there is Sprint 3G or 4G mobile broadband service. inPerson can be used without a web browser or wireless subscription service. With support for the most frequently used signaling standards for videophones, both SIP and H.323, inPerson provides the most versatile video conferencing solution on the market today.

As part of the agreement, Walsh Wireless will serve as the centralized solution procurement and delivery point for Creative inPerson with Sprint wireless network connectivity through all available sales channels. Walsh Wireless will bundle the inPerson unit with a router and a Sprint data connection card, and the Company will also provide custom logistics and ongoing support as part of its 5 Star Service Experience. Sprint operates America’s most dependable 3G network.* Sprint 4G is currently available in Baltimore and is expected to be available in Portland, Las Vegas, Atlanta and other markets this summer.

“In the current economic climate, businesses need to find ways to work smarter, increase employee productivity and reach decisions quickly” said Chick Walsh, Founder and Chief Strategy Officer, Walsh Wireless. “The Creative Labs In-Person device ease of use, flexibility and affordability allows companies to easily do just that. We are excited about our partnership with Creative Labs and believe the In-Person device, along with Wireless Broadband Network capability and Walsh Wireless’ 5 Star Customer Experience, will reinvent the way corporations and individuals communicate in the future.”

Creative also announced today that inPerson is now interoperable with video conferencing systems from Polycom, Tandberg, Lifesize, Sony and Aethra, which are traditionally stationed in corporate boardrooms. With the portable, compact and lightweight inPerson, traveling executives and salespeople as well as telecommuters can communicate with colleagues and customers from the road with the impact of actually being in a face-to-face meeting.

“In a market where companies are striving to cut costs, inPerson provides a totally disruptive and cost-effective technology that enables companies and employees to increase productivity while greatly reducing travel costs,” said Jeff Stoen, VP and GM for inPerson Conferencing at Creative. “From major corporations to our own U.S. President, business leaders are actively communicating the need for videoconferencing. What’s great about adding mobility and interoperability to inPerson is that now the device can truly integrate into existing corporate video conferencing systems that aren’t accessible to all employees and are relegated to the board room. With inPerson you can experience all the benefits of video conferencing whether you’re in a busy airport, hotel conference room or working at home.”

With a footprint of less than 8 x 6 x 2 inches and weighing less than two pounds, the wireless inPerson features a high-quality seven-inch screen for high-resolution VGA video, and it can connect to a large flat panel screen, TV or projector for life-size high-resolution video presence.

Creative inPerson is available now for only US$859.99 including a one-year service agreement.

The Creative US site has gotten the facelift that the rest of the region got a few weeks ago. In addition to the update on the inside, the store has gotten its biggest update since the site went live way back in the twentieth century. The interface is now clean and easy to navigate, and the new URL scheme is a bit less random. It’s much easier to pick out of the lineup if you’re not able to search through the history. After much frustration, they also added a prominent search option. It’s estimated it will save billions of hours of work instead of navigating through every menu as with the old system. More importantly, however, is the new WebStore system that the company uses. While it’s still the same Creative inventory and shipping (I believe), the entire user interface is a modified version of Amazon’s fantastic system. It even uses Amazon’s system for payment, which, while still bad for PayPal and Google Checkout lovers, is better than the previous system of manual entering. Overall, it’s a much needed coat of paint on the outside and a extremely powerful system on the inside. WebStore will hopefully improve the buying process in addition to ease of RMA and shipment tracking. With the Zii looming overhead, Creative seems to have begun a turn for the better- in all departments.

In a stunning turn of events, it is time to say goodbye to Creative Technology. The company, founded in 1981, has been purchased by Cupertino-based Apple Inc. Creative had been Apple’s foremost rival in the digital audio market, and beat them to the market with their NOMAD player. Creative also was the dominant force in third party sound cards, with the X-Fi line being recognized as the top of the line in sound cards. Apple acting CEO Timothy Cook announced that the entirety of Creative will be disbanded, and will be merged into existing Apple development markets. For more information, you can visit an excellent source for everything that is ever going to happen with Apple and Creative at Apple’s PR site here. As I learn more of this tragic event, I’ll post here.

As if… it’s too easy to do on a day like this!

Despite being closed and empty for a while, the Mariana Square (Singapore) Creative outlet store will soon return to the mall. Creative closed it because of climbing rent, but according to Nothing But Creative, the mall substantially reduced the rate at which Creative was leasing the space, prompting the return to the mall. Nothing But Creative says that the store should re-open in the next few weeks. Creative’s retail outlets only exist in Singapore, but the rest of the world can access the great savings (a $38 ZEN on Creative US!) on their regional Creative page.

Despite the global economic crisis and companies cutting jobs right and left, Creative Singapore is hiring some very high end jobs, perhaps ramping up for the launch of their new player. They are hiring in an area that got my attention, though: a new Senior Designer.

The senior designer(s) that they are hiring will be in charge of “creating exciting User Interface (UI) designs for Personal Digital Entertainment devices”. The way they worded it, specifically the whole “creating” part, makes it seem like there will be a whole new interface coming. While it’s also possible that it simply means creating UIs for the new player by adapting the classic ZEN interface, it’s much more exciting to think that the company is retooling for the new player. In my opinion, this is do or die time for the company: the Zen Vision:M is the last Creative player that captivated the public, and it seems like the brand is losing relevance and respect in a market that they created. There is very little time left if Creative is going to stay in the DAP ballgame. For the sake of competition and free market enterprise, let’s hope they do. I believe they can.

Additionally, the company seems to be hiring an Operations Director for ZiiLabs, and an software developer for the SoundBlaster/Webcam team. Less exciting, but for any company to be hiring in this tumultous time leaves only a positive feeling. Perhaps newly out of work personnel who, desperate for a job, will land at Creative and get the cogs of awesomeness moving again. The complete job description for the Singapore jobs are as follows:

Software Engineer: You will undertake projects in developing application software, application programming interfaces (APIs), or utilities for Creative’s range of audio and video products. You can expect to work using the latest software technologies and tools. You can also look forward to working with our international partners in application software developments.

Operations Director: You will be a key member of the senior management team. Your key responsibilities include setting up and managing the small Operations Department of a fabless semiconductor company. You will be involved in recruiting staff to form the new Operations team and managing this team who will handle: semiconductor supplier selection, negotiation, manufacturing and delivery; semiconductor test development and manufacturing test logistics; semiconductor process monitoring and product yield improvement; product qualification; as well as product quality issue resolution. You are expected to grow the Operations team in line with requirements.

Senior Designer: You will be responsible for creating exciting User Interface (UI) designs for Personal Digital Entertainment devices that result in a rich and compelling user experience. You will participate in all stages of the design life cycle; from identifying user needs, conducting user task analysis and designing user interfaces to evaluating designs through usability testing. You will lead a team of designers for visual and interaction design of software application and Personal Digital Devices.

Designer (Visual): You will be responsible for conceptualizing and realizing visual design and prototyping of Graphical User Interface (for software in consumer electronics products) and visual design for Personal Digital Entertainment devices.

Designer (Interaction): You will be responsible for designing engaging user experiences for consumer applications and Personal Digital Entertainment device.

If you’re in East Asia and think you can take these important positions, the applications are available on the web here.
